Often, in talking about what I do, I tend to say that I am more of a Web Developer than a Web Designer. As a small business owner, I’m not so sure my potential or existing clients know what the difference is or why I would emphasize the Web Development over Web Design. Having done some research on the web, I’ve come to the conclusion that there is no clear definitive statement as to what the difference is between these two terms. There are some common ideas as to what these terms mean but there are many differences of opinions. For this reason, I thought I’d give a personal take on this.
To explain what the difference means to me, let me give examples of what I did in the past as an Electrical/Computer Engineer, and what many of my colleagues have been doing in the area of Engineering. Often, what an Engineer does is Design things specific to his or her field of specialization as an Engineer. A computer engineer might design a computer or some type of computer component. We’ll return to the computer engineer in a moment. The Aerospace Engineer designs aircraft, spacecrafts, and such. The Mechanical Engineer designs mechanical systems using the principles of physics.
